T.O. Kiwanis Offers $1,000 Scholarships for Seniors Heading to Local Colleges
In an effort to support local high school seniors who plan to live at home while attending a commutable community college or four-year university, the Thousand Oaks Kiwanis Club is offering eleven $1,000 scholarships for students attending Thousand Oaks, Westlake, or Oak Park high schools.
The $11,000 in scholarships will be distributed into five different types of awards: Ashcraft scholarships (five of them) are for math/science majors from any of the high schools; Sprankling scholarships are designated for Key Club student members at WHS, OPHS and TOHS (one for each school); Two Hyink scholarships are designated for metal-working students at TOHS (may also be used for vocational school); and finally, one Gwen Huffer scholarship will be awarded to a TOHS female planning to major in the healthcare field.
It is not required that students attend a local college, but preference will be given to those who are planning to stay local for their post-high-school educational pursuits. Winners will be awarded their $1,000 check in May at a regular meeting of the TO Kiwanis Club.
Application packets are available on the TOKiwanis.org website under the menu dropdown title “What We Do” – then “Scholarships.” Or email the scholarship committee chairperson at scholarship@tokiwanis.org for more information or an application. Deadline for receipt of applications via email or ground mail is April 15, 2022.

Top Ten Tips for "Winning" Scholarship Applications (From FastWEB.com)
- Apply only if you are eligible. Read requirements and directions carefully.
- Complete application in full. If a question does not apply, note that on the application. Do not leave a blank.
- Follow directions. Provide everything that is required, but do not supply things that are not requested – you could be disqualified.
- Neatness counts. Always type the application if you can, or if you must print, do so neatly and legibly.
- Make sure your essay makes an impression. Be personal and specific. Include concrete details to make your experience come alive.
- Watch all deadlines. Don’t send the materials in late – they will be refused.
- Take steps to make sure your entire application gets where it needs to go. Place name on all pages of the application in case it comes apart.
- Give it a final ‘once-over.’ Proofread carefully. Ask another person to read it over before you submit it.
- Ask for help if you need it. Email your counselor or Mrs. Peters.
- Remember: your scholarship application represents you! Your ability to submit a neat, timely, complete application reflects on you.
